“If this book had been written by an adult author, it would have been an impressive debut novel,” says Joe Murkette. “Given that it was written by a young woman in her teens, it is not only impressive, but inspirational. Alessia Dickson qualifies not only as a literary prodigy, but a potential literary star.”
Winners of the 2017 Purple Dragonfly Book Awards have been announced and The Crystal Chronicles by Alessia Dickson has earned this year’s $500 Grand Prize as well as a First Place designation in the Youth Author Fiction category. Dickson has been writing novels since she was six years old. By the time she turned 10, she had completed the 50 novellas, and at age 16, her first book, The Crystal Chronicles, was published. The plot centers around a seemingly normal teenage girl who finds out that she’s an Elemental, a member of a supernatural race that controls the elements. With the future of humanity in danger, it’s up to her to save it.
Now 18, Dickson’s work has been compared to that of J.K. Rowling and Cassandra Clare, and the judges of the Purple Dragonfly Awards agree.
"What a great presentation! Alessia demonstrated how hard work and a love of writing has brought great things to her life. She was motivating and empowered the students to follow their passions, take a look at the things they love to do and encouraged them to work hard and never give up. What a great role model for our students. The Crystal Chronicles is a fantastic Young Adult book. The students and I agree that we couldn’t put the book down. We are looking forward to the next books in her series!!"
"We were fortunate enough to have Alessia Dickson at our school before March break for an author visit. The students loved her presentation as she was very entertaining and captivating. She was asked many questions at the end of her talk, and she answered them patiently and enthusiastically. After the presentation, there was a long line of kids waiting to buy her book, The Crystal Chronicles, and have her sign their books. We are looking forward to reading her second book, which apparently is coming soon."
"I think the Crystal Chronicles is a great book for anybody 11 + years old! It is very descriptive and interesting! It's probably the best book I have read so far! It shows how Alyssa struggles through her life and finally finds out where she fits in! I would recommend this book to anyone! I think the Crystal Chronicles is going to make it's way to the top!"
"I just wanted to let you know how much I love the book The Crystal Chronicles and how excited I am for the next book of the series to come out. I am basically praying they create a movie off of your series because seriously, who wouldn't like it? I bought your book when you came to my school to talk about it. St. Veronica is really happy you came and all my friends are reading your book and love it! Anyway, your story of how you became an author is an inspiration to me and has inspired me to work harder at acting. Thank you for making The Crystal Chronicles and never, never, stop writing."
"I loved the way how it has twists to it and deeply goes into the term magic. Most people might think it's about the "avatar" but it's completely different. There were moments where I could relate to what the main character was going through. It was a truly magnificent book and it was also beautifully written!"
"The concept of the book was really nice, I like how it was based on the Elementals and how there would be more parts and leaves you on a cliff hanger. Also in every book like you said you visit a different country and place to find the crystal of that element. I did enjoy the book a lot, it was worth the cost. I loved how your sister drew the snake and the elemental staff. I was very impressed, I like how you included a type of villain because it makes the story more interesting and how they would possibly have a fight at the last book."
"I loved this book so much it was amazing and I can't wait for more I've been reading it non stop!"

"I'm just about to finish the book and so far, it is AMAZING! Every time I pick it up, I never seem to be able to put it down. I love the characters and everything about the book. You also came to my school and I loved your presentation, you had lots of energy and inspired me to read and write more! The only thing is that you are totally killing me because I want to be an Elemental SO badly!"
