Yuri the monkey finds a basket in the forest and begins to capture small animals in it. He collects as many different critters as possible, to show his friends. Then he suddenly steps in a snare and gets trapped in a tree, dropping his basket of critters. 2 humans walk by and notice him and his basket filled with sad looking animals. When the little girl asks her father is they can keep Yuri as a pet, his heart drops. He suddenly realizes how it must have felt to be an animal in his basket. His heart races with the thought of being a pet. Then the little girl’s father explains that all of these animals have families and deserve to be free. After the humans help free Yuri, he stops and looks at his collection of animals in the basket and says … “I am sorry. Now I realize how you felt when I captured you.” We really enjoyed reading this one in class. The writing and illustrations are excellent! The storyline is simple and yet delivers a clear and powerful message about empathy. I’m always on the lookout for thought provoking books like this. This is absolutely a must have!

This book had a total classroom book feel to it. I could picture this being read to me in Pre-K or kindergarten. I like the way the words are written because it emphasizes certain parts. It helped my son (6 years) read it to my daughter (2 years). It has that classic feel to it where there's a problem with the main character and the friends band together to help them out. Always love those kinds of books for kids because it teaches them about helping and friendship. We liked the ieda that the lion can just take off his mane as if it were a hat. And as a lot of problems happened in the home, the little sibling had something to do with it. Great story, fun illustrations. Just an overall great book.

A lovely story full of adventure and exploring, for young siblings to read together, as the main characters are Lou the lion and his little brother. The little brother caused Lou to lose something very important to him and Lou becomes very worried. By the end, everyone laughs at what has happened and Lou’s little brother just wanted to be like him - a lot of younger siblings can probably relate to this fun and child-friendly story. The front cover is intriguing and fun to look at, with a lion and a mesmerising jungle setting. Children looking at the front cover may ask questions such as ‘What happens to Lou’s mane?’ or ‘Are there other animals in the story too?’. Showing young children pictures is a great way for them to increase there vocabulary and talk about what’s happening or going to happen. There are a variety of beautiful and vibrant pictures of the jungle and many animals including lion siblings, a bird, giraffe, monkey, snake, mole and a crocodile. Children will love the hilarious parts of the story, such as when Lou says ‘I can-an-a-not-t-t-t-t feel my my my ma-a-a-a-ne!’, when the monkey is riding on the giraffes back and the facial expressions of the animals. The story has real facts about animals including that giraffes have long necks, lions are the king of the jungle and moles live in holes underground. The message of the story is to be courageous, not give up so easily, always help your friends and embrace your differences!

I love reading Children's Books to my nephew. Recently I read the book "LOU AND HIS MANE" to him. It is a beautiful story about a little lion Lou who on waking up found out that his mane is missing. Lou is courageous and being the king of the jungle, he couldn't give up. Different animals will come forward to help Lou in finding his mane. Will they be successful? This is a well written story that teaches valuable lessons to the kids. I am glad to get my hands on this book. I appreciate the storytelling skills of the author. The pages of the book are so colorful that my nephew enjoyed reading this book a lot. We are definitely interested to read more of Emma's work in the future.
